Registers Update 16th September 2024

Latest Register Files

So as soon as I say that I think the Australian civil register update frequency has dropped to once a month. A nuw update drops two weeks later, just to prove me wrong. The register files on the download page have now all been updated, with the files dated the 16th of September 2024.

Again feel free to download the files, for your personal use only. You should note that these are at the date specified on the downloads page, as is the record count.

As the Australian file seems to have the longest update interval, no I’m not going to specify the interval as it seems to change whenever I do. So all the files will carry the date where Australia updates the available register. The canadian and US files are updated on a daily basis, but the work of consolidating the data files on a daily basis is more than I want to do.

These files will be ahead of commercial products for just a short time, until the updaters catch up.

It does take some time and effort to create these downloads, also there are a number of costs associated with running the site. So if you can consider supporting this site with a donation it would be helpful, if you find the site useful then why not treat me to a doughnut – or even a doughnut and a coffee if you’re feeling really flush.

Or if you are thinking of ordering something from Amazon then you could click the link to get there, it doesn’t actually cost you anything. And it will help me to pay for the site hosting, which is getting more expensive like everything else.

But regardless of whether you donate or not, I hope that the contents of the files are of some use, also bear in mind that the files are as dated in the bar graph on the down load page – I will try and produce a new data set every month or more frequently if time allows.

Please note these files are provided for personal use, if you want to use them for any other purpose or if you want to make them available through your own site – get in touch first.

My data, your data.

Anyone who has visited the downloads page on this site will have seen that there are a number of files available, these files are created by me from a number of sources and I intend to add more files over time.

The files are created from official sources and come with any mistakes contained in those official sources, just because it comes from the Federal Aviation Authority doesn’t actually mean that it is correct. What has to be taken into account is the fact that there are probably few checks on the data, that the data is input by individuals and there are many ways for the individual to missconstrue that data.

Take as an example the North American P-51D Mustang, almost all of them are using the USAAF assigned serial number instaed of the North American manufactiring serial number. In some cases the USAAF serial number is hyphenated in other cases not, the aitcraft detail is also sometimes hyphenated and sometimes not as in P51 or P-51. Not that this is a problem in the case of the P-51D as the MSN can be tied to the USAAF serial with relative simplicity, it is just an example of how even data from official sources can be a bit ambiguous.

The P-51 is also recorded as a number of types, each with its own identifier in the FAA database download, these were the official type identifiers – so we also have the F-51 hyphenated and not along with the F6A. There can be incorect manufacturer names, one that comes to ming is American Avia INC – where the type is redorded as a “North American P-51B”.

It generally doesn’t matter, it may to the purist but for most plane spotters all there needs to be is a way of differentiating between aircraft of the same type.

There are many examples of this type error scattered throughout official data sources, generally considered too big a task to rectify these things tend to be left as they are  – just for ease of keeping relatively accurate records. In my data I have not ammended the serial number just because of the amount of work, what about your data?

Files Update

The New Data Files.

Have grown tired of waiting for the Australian data file to be updated, so have ammended the downloads page to reflect the data set used to create the files along with the record count for each file.

Hopefully the Australian file will be updated soon, I’m currently working on converting the ancillary datafiles from the Australian site and expect to have them done for the middle of August this should add a few thousand additional records to the downloads available. It will comprise at least two files, the derigistered and the changed registration files.

Following that I expect to be uploading some more check lists and a number of military data sets, but first I’m off line for a couple of weeks.

If anyone has anything specific that they would like, I’ll see if I can extract it and put it in a format that can be used from the downloads page. But it’s unlikely that I’ll be picking up any stuff from the site until the begining of August at the earliest.

New Downloads Page

Data Downloads

Those of you who know me, will know that I’ve been collecting and processing aviation data for over 25 years. Those of you who don’t know me, well I have thousands of files – just from the FAA download site. But have been downloading many others for just about as long, where I identify that a file has changes I download and store it.

I have now decided to make some of the data sets available, to do this I have striped out most of the data and have created a stndard format for the registers and given free access to the data – why have I done this?

I have alwayd found that the ability for specific searches is missing in the official sites, for instance you can search by a registration, or an owner but the results are usually restricted. So the data files I have created are designed to be loaded into any standard application and you can search how you like, as an example all Cessna 177’s.

The information is minimal and one record per line, it is a list of comma separated values  containing registration, manufacturer, model, construction number and registrant. The registrant may be the owner, a company or an agency.

You should be able to load the data into Microsoft Excel or an equivalent, or a word processing package like word if you really wanted to print out the “thousands of pages”. Currently there are 350,000 active air frames available to download, covering Australia, Canada and the United States along with 375,000 de-registered frames from the United States Data. As a guide printing these out would run to approximately 20,000 pages.
